The best free desktop OS for the non technical
In a previous post I mentioned PC-BSD – a operating system built on the FreeBSD operating system.
You can get a copy of PC-BSD over at: http://www.pcbsd.org/
….
I consider it the best OS to use – if your looking to get away from using Windows but don’t want to pay for a Mac.
The reasons being:
It follows the BSD way of doing things – basically: engineered, not thrown together.
Secondly – software is installed in a similar way as on the Mac and Windows.
For non technical users this is a real benefit as they don’t have to learn a new way of installing things, they don’t have to deal with dependency issues.
You just download the software you want to install from http://www.pbidir.com/ when it’s on your computer all you have to do is the same thing you would normally do on say Windows or the Mac.
Double click on the icon.
With other open source OS’s you have to learn a new way of installing things.
Which is about as far a way form what a non technical person would conceder the norm.
Even with package management systems, dependency issues are still an issue.
Which they don’t have to deal with in PC-BSD – unless they want to.
This means no calling you up to get help on installing some software because the installation is complaining about a dependency issue.
Or when something breaks after they removed a piece of software.
PC-BSD = support bliss.

What do you think - comments welcome.
