To me IT can be split up into 3 areas, which are:

1. Principles
The fundamental ideas on which everything is based on.

2. Strategies

The principles or the ideas implemented for a defined purpose or outcome.

3. Tactics

How you implement the strategies – the nuts and bolts if you will.

If we were to apply those 3 areas to say transportation – say plains, trains and automobiles, just like the film : )

The principles include things like:

Chemical reactions of fuels.
E.g. gas, petrol, diesel and jet fuel.

Newton’s laws of motion.

The laws of aerodynamics.

The strategies take those principles as well as others, which influence the design of the device based on the desired outcome.

For example the laws of aerodynamics would be needed in the design of a plain that could fly. Their also used in the design of a car but not to make it fly (unless that is the goal) but to increase the efficiency of the body for better performance.

The tactics are things like:

The types of breaks to use.

The type of suspension to use.

What material the shell or body of the device will be made from.

E.g. Steel, Aluminum, Carbon fiber, GRP etc.

The type of engine to use.

E.g. Turbine, Piston, Rocket, Ram Jet etc.

If you don’t understand the principles, the strategies are going to be flawed and the likelihood of you building a plane that fly’s is doubtful at best.

But once you do – how you implement your design physically is the easy bit, as you will have a plan that you can follow.

You then choose how it’s physically built, what it’s made of, what components to use based on how you want it to perform, which is all in your design – the strategy.
