In reply to: An A+ Is Just Not Enough…
Over at lockergnome.com (here) I posted the following (at time of writing comment not showing):
Volunteering is the way to go, try to see if you can do it at a charity and/or university – worked for me. Landed me 15 contracts, 4 years of employment and and so much experience in the 4 main areas of IT administration and support – being: user, desktop, server and network
That job agency recruiters are amazed.
I’m not sure about the US as I’m in the UK, but all the entry level IT qualifications are a joke. I’ve gone through the A+ and the Cisco CCNA and their a joke.
With the CCNA the recommended trouble shooting that’s covered is:
Ping
Trace route
That’s it.I’ve mentored 2 CCNA qualified trainees and asked them to think about what they learnt and they both couldn’t come up with anything else.
I also discussed this with a friend (long time admin who was doing the CCNA on the side) when he went over all his notes he couldn’t believe how little is covered on recommended trouble shooting.
The Oracle qualification is point less as no one does it and no one asks for it.
As was mentioned in the main article about the TV ad’s, no one gets a job that easily. Plus their a waist of money you can do it cheaper on your own, in both routes you don’t gain the necessary experience.I’ve also mentored a guy who was twice my age (in say his 50’s) who claimed to have gone through and completed the MCSE. Never saw any physical proof, and his knowledge was completely lacking even in just basic areas, that would have been covered in a MCSE.
I can’t comment on the PC repair area as I’ve only worked in large network environments, but if you need any advice on that area – I’m over at: http://www.itjuju.com

What do you think - comments welcome.
