How to determine the real costs and risks of single points of failure…
Another important post that was made on the warrior forum under the thread: Getresponse…your lists aren’t working…
For the reason why it’s here see how-to-do-upgrades-which-minimises-downtime-and-problems/
As it’s no longer on the forum, it’s now here.

There’s more to it than that.
Yes relying on just one of anything isn’t a good idea, but you also have to take into account the time, money and effort required to reduce that reliance.
Be it duplication of what your already doing in a different location – as either a active or as stand by backup.
Some times it’s just not worth it, which then leaves you with having to reduce the risk of relying on that one critical component.
Each persons situation is different – but the two things you need to take into account are:
- Is it worth the time, money and effort.
- How much risk are you willing to take.
The order above isn’t critical, you can apply the risk before the worth and vise versa – it’s all dependent on the situation.
If you apply the above to all situations (even non IT ones), you’ll be far ahead of most businesses – as you’ll be in the know when most aren’t.
Whatever you do, even if you decide to do nothing – is doing something. Sounds strange but you’ll at least have taken a look and made a decision – which most businesses don’t do.

What do you think - comments welcome.
