An easy way to transfer files between Mac’s and PC’s…

For this you’ll need firewire (A.K.A Firewire 1394)

If your PC already has firewire then just give the 1394 network interface an IP address (say 192.168.5.1 and subnet mask of: 255.255.255.0).

On your Mac give the firewire network interface a different IP address (say 192.168.5.2 and subnet mask of: 255.255.255.0) and you’re good to go – once you connected them up with a firewire cable.

What you do is basically share out files or folders and treat each machine as a NAS.

Or if you download the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection software for the Mac you can use the drive sharing feature within the software when you connect to the PC from your Mac.

That then allows you to transfer files to or from each other.

If you have everything:

  • A PC with firewire
  • A firewire cable
  • Plus a Mac which will already have firewire

Then you don’t need to spend a penny.

If your PC doesn’t have firewire, you can buy a cheap firewire card – their easy to install and gives you a transfer technology which is far superior than USB in my opinion.

What do you think - comments welcome.
